Over a month after it's release in Japan, NCS finally rouses
from slumber and imports the WSC version of Golden Axe.
Based on Sega's 1989 coin-op, the game features three
warriors who venture forth to exact revenge on a tyrant
named Death Adder. As the game begins, an NPC named Alex is
killed and villages are being ransacked. Someone has to pay.
Players may choose a squat elf named Gilius Thunderhead, who
wields a hefty axe and wields middling magic skills or a
barbarian known as Axe Battler who musters weak magic but
fights with a strong attack. Finally, Tyris Flare's the
resident amazon whose sword strokes are light but her magic
powers inflict wicked destruction. She's capable of
summoning a dragon who fills up 1/3 of the screen and blasts
billowing flames here and there. Golden Axe plays similarly
to other punch, kick, slash, and jump games from the late
80s and early 90s. It's an average affair with unremarkable
gameplay where you attack enemies and dodge attacks. Tapping
the D-pad twice in quick succession will force your warrior
to run and hitting the attack button results in a running
attack. Little munchkin bag-holders are littered through the
game who leave a little gift when slashed. Listen to their
squeaks when your sword bites. |
