loosely as "Great Brother: Legend of Holy Protein," a new Cho Aniki
shooting game looses itself upon Japan this week to scare small
children and scatter woodland animals. The themes in Cho Aniki are
homoerotic enough to make hetero men feel uncomfortable with an
overbearing duo named Adon and Samson who exude muscle-bound
manliness with no fear of their femininity. In other words, they're
flaming. When they're not parading and posing in bikini briefs, the
two engage in a bounty of socially awkward graphical displays by
themselves and with each other.
As the story goes, the "brothers" range far into the galaxy to
search for a magical muscle maximizing protein which will help them
maintain their ample girth, bulk and shiny tautness. With bodies and
parts that bulge and glisten as much as they do, every little bit
helps with the upkeep. Between them, a bit of protein serves as the
"ship" in the game - a ship that is fortunate enough to be flanked
and protected by such manly men.
Watch in amazement (or terror) as the heroes fly across the screen
and blast everything in sight with lasers which burst from the top
of their shiny pates. Standard limp shots flow when the shot button
is tapped but perform a charge-up move by furiously wagging the Dual
Shock thumb stick and the fellas perk up and spurt stronger,
straighter stuff at oncoming foes. In other words, the brothers
become spirited shooters when you work them...up. When bullets fly
towards the blob of protein, the brothers may be arranged in
formation to block shots. However, each connecting attack hurts the
libido of Adon or Samson so powerups must be picked up to
reinvigorate the boys back to their sturdy selves. They can't take
such a constant hammering without a little pick-me-up along the way.
When they're in their prime however, the brothers serve as great
bodyguards capable of deftly shielding the precious protein ship.
The boys aren't the only sights to see in Cho Aniki. The foes and
bosses are amply odd as well from the panty-waist showman to a genie
who floats on an intricate piece of fabric. Based on the hefty
amount of preorders for this game, we're convinced that buyers know
a good thing when they see it... Strangely fascinating in a multiple
car wreck sort of way, Cho Aniki nukes the shmup mold once again.
