Manly Muscle Men

PS2 Cho Aniki Seinaru Protein Densetsu - Shipping Today
Translated loosely as "Great Brother: Legend of Holy Protein," a new Cho Aniki shooting game looses itself upon Japan this week to scare small children and scatter woodland animals. The themes in Cho Aniki are homoerotic enough to make hetero men feel uncomfortable with an overbearing duo named Adon and Samson who exude muscle-bound manliness with no fear of their femininity. When they're not parading and posing in bikini briefs, the two engage in a bounty of awkward graphical displays by themselves...and with each other. As the story goes, the "brothers" range far into the galaxy to search for a magical muscle maximizing protein which will help them maintain their ample girth, bulk and shiny tautness. With bodies and parts that bulge and glisten as much as they do, every little bit helps with the upkeep.
Watch in amazement (or terror) as the heroes fly across the screen and blast everything in sight with lasers which burst from the top of their shiny pates. Standard limp shots flow when the shot button is tapped but perform a charge-up move by furiously wagging the Dual Shock thumb stick and the fellas perk up and spurt stronger, straighter stuff at oncoming foes. In other words, the brothers become spirited shooters when you work them...up. Strangely fascinating, Cho Aniki nukes the shmup mold once again.

Dust off the Tatacon

PS2 Taiko no Tatsujin Appare Sandaime - Shipping Today
The third Taiko no Tatsujin (Drum Master) rhythm game bops over to the PS2 as the winter of 2003 closes in. Play mechanics are simple, with five basic moves to tap on the TataCon drum controller as colored smiley face cues scroll across the screen on a continuous conveyer belt. For example, when a Red Smiley face hits the targeting marker, the player bangs the surface of the Tatacon drum controller with one beat. Should a Blue Smiley rush across the screen, the player rumbles sticks on the edge of the Tatacon to get kudos.
Musical selections in the game include 39 new songs out of 103 total which range the J-Pop spectrum from recent favorites to chart topping hits such as "Good Bye Summer," "Door to Tomorrow," "One Night Carnival," "True Blue," "UFO," and then there are even Namco's own classics such as the theme from Galaga '88 and "Soul Calibur II Brave Sword, Braver Soul."
A new mini-game mode may also be enjoyed where two rhythm-ready dogs raise and lower flags in time to your drum beats, which in turn are triggered by following onscreen cues. Three other mini-games are also available which test the mettle of rhythm artists with a penchant for banging the drum. Clearing two or three mini-games successfully will unlock additional mini-games for further deployment.

VF 10th Anniversary

NEWS Virtua Fighter 10th Anniversary - Shipping Nov. 28
Enterbrain has started soliciting preorders for a 10th anniversary Virtua Fighter mook bundle which includes a copy of Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution with the original blocky polygon graphics and a retrospective DVD which looks back at the origins of the series, the subsequent games and the memorable characters such as Shun Di and the Bryants. A mook (that's magazine-book) holds the two disks in its recesses and contains a bunch of artwork, interviews and data on the fighting game that took a 2-D genre dominated by Capcom and broadened it with 3-D scale and mechanics. The cloners would soon find inspiration in Virtua Fighter and flesh out the fighting market with their own 3-D offerings such as Toshinden, Zero Divide and Tekken. Capcom also entered the fray with the largely forgettable Star Gladiator and Street Fighter EX. Fittingly, Sega pays homage to the game that started it all, especially since no one else is going to pay that tribute.
Preorders for VF 10th Anniversary ~Memory of Decade~ will ship on November 28, 2003 from NCS. Please note that limited distribution is expected for this item and we start preorders today at US$40.
