GC PC Genjin - Shipping today

Given a choice between evolution or a hard head, PC Genjin (aka Bonk and henceforth referred to as, in this text) chose the latter and gaming fans since 1989 have enjoyed his wacky exploits. Once exclusive to the PC-Engine and TurboGrafx consoles, Bonk gave his all through three platformers on the Engine, two conversions on the Super Famicom and his progeny were featured in a derivative shooter called PC Denjin (Punkic Cyborgs) or Air Zonk in the USA. It's been a few years since anyone has seen the caveman on any console but 2003 marks the beginning of a new era of PC Genjin domination ...or something like that.
Booting up the game, one is immediately struck by the beautifully rendered graphics. Whereas the original used simple drawings and scrawled artwork, PC Genjin looks lush and fully fleshed out with sumptuous colors and mottled environments brimming with detail. The play mechanics are similar to the original where Bonk dawdles across the screen and knocks anything in his path with the old noggin. A jump move lifts Bonk over oncoming creatures while continuously tapping the bonk button in mid-air spins Bonk like a hovering blob of flesh as he rotates with gravity defying prowess. Doing the head butt on plants lets loose chunks of meat which Bonk gobbles to raucous effect and transformation. Hearts to refuel Bonk's energy meter may be picked up along with the occasional fruit for bonus points.
During his travels, bulging eyes, a runny nose, red-faced consternation and other facial deformations are some of Bonk's expressions after getting hit. Check out the choppers as well when Bonk uses his teeth to climb walls. Fun, bewildering, and dare we say, endearing... PC Genjin should appeal to at least 3 people outside of Japan.
Bonus features on the disk include a mini-game which is unlocked after completing the main game once and a gallery mode which shows off old PC Genjin commercials and advertisements from yesteryear.
