PC Genjin

GC/PS2 PC Genjin - Shipping today

GC PS2
Given a choice between evolution or a hard head, PC Genjin (aka Bonk and henceforth referred to as, in this text) chose the latter and gaming fans since 1989 have enjoyed his wacky exploits. Once exclusive to the PC-Engine and TurboGrafx consoles, Bonk gave his all through three platformers on the Engine, two conversions on the Super Famicom and his progeny were featured in a derivative shooter called PC Denjin (Punkic Cyborgs) or Air Zonk in the USA. It's been a few years since anyone has seen the caveman on any console but 2003 marks the beginning of a new era of PC Genjin domination ...or something like that.
Booting up the game, one is immediately struck by the beautifully rendered graphics. Whereas the original used simple drawings and scrawled artwork, PC Genjin looks lush and fully fleshed out with sumptuous colors and mottled environments brimming with detail. The play mechanics are similar to the original where Bonk dawdles across the screen and knocks anything in his path with the old noggin. A jump move lifts Bonk over oncoming creatures while continuously tapping the bonk button in mid-air spins Bonk like a hovering blob of flesh as he rotates with gravity defying prowess. Doing the head butt on plants lets loose chunks of meat which Bonk gobbles to raucous effect and transformation. Hearts to refuel Bonk's energy meter may be picked up along with the occasional fruit for bonus points.
During his travels, bulging eyes, a runny nose, red-faced consternation and other facial deformations are some of Bonk's expressions after getting hit. Check out the choppers as well when Bonk uses his teeth to climb walls. Fun, bewildering, and dare we say, endearing... PC Genjin should appeal to at least 3 people outside of Japan.
Bonus features on the disk include a mini-game which is unlocked after completing the main game once and a gallery mode which shows off old PC Genjin commercials and advertisements from yesteryear.

PS2 Ashita no Joe: Masshiro ni Moe Tsukiro! - Shipping today

When darkness falls and thoughts turn to those of tragic heroes, one must give consideration to the tale of Ashita no Joe. From destitute beginnings in the Doya slums and bleak prospects to the top ranks of the boxing elite, Joe Yabuki became a hero to manga readers and college students across Japan during the tumultuous 70s. Creators Asao Takamori and Tetsuya Chiba debuted Ashita no Joe at a time when considerable economic and social upheaval was transforming Japanese culture and Joe's trials struck a resonant chord. The PS2 game recreates the manga and animation with familiar characters, memorable matches and a faithful storyline. Characters such as archrival Toru Rikiishi, Danpei Tange, Goromaki Gondoh, Tiger Ozaki, Wolf Kanagushi, Carlos Rivera, Hamario, and World Champion Jose Mendoza show up as supporting cast. Boxing matches are viewed from an overhead and side perspective where two brutes dance and sting in rapid-fire fashion. Regulation issue health meters above each boxer gauge the progress of the fight. Story scenes are told through art panels and character interaction sequences. Defeating or losing to a contender forks the storyline into branches where new fighters challenge Joe. Nostalgic manga fans may find comfort in the Art Gallery which brims with illustrations and character profiles.

PS2 Virtua Fighter 10th Anniv.

PS2 Virtua Fighter 10th Anniversary DVD - Shipping today

Ten years ago, a Sega team dubbed AM2 led by Yu Suzuki started a 3-D movement that blazed the trail for a whole new way of fighting. Up until that time, Capcom and a number of copycats ruled the gaming world with a 2-D fist. Once Virtua Fighter debuted, the cloners soon found inspiration (some found entire blueprints and design pointers) and filled up the fighting market with their own 3-D offerings such as Toshinden, Zero Divide, Critical Blow and countless others that have since faded into obscurity. Capcom also entered the fray with the largely forgettable Star Gladiator and Street Fighter EX but their forte remains in 2-D fighting to this day. Fittingly then, Sega pays homage to the game that started it all.
The 10th anniversary Virtua Fighter mook bundle includes a copy of Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution reworked with the blocky polygon graphics found in the original game and a retrospective DVD which looks back at the origins of the series, the subsequent games and memorable characters such as Pai, Shun Di and the Bryants. A mook (that's magazine-book) bundled with the two disks contains a bunch of artwork, interviews and data on the fighting game that took a 2-D genre dominated by Capcom and broadened it with 3-D scale and mechanics. All this goodness is then encased in a plastic slipcase for easy archival in your Virtua Fighter shrine.

Power Pro Kun Pocket 6

GBA Power Pro Kun Pocket 6 - Shipping Today

Wee warriors of the diamond return once again to thrill portable baseball fans with hearty baseball action. Become a renaissance man of sorts by performing managerial duties, pitching and the batting to boot. A positioning cursor helps to make the art of hitting a pitch as a batter and spotting one while on the mound a precise if not infallible science.
Those more into watching the game may opt for the Pennant Mode where teams are chosen for the season rotation and entire games are played in the space of minutes. Innings run down quickly and automatically as ruled by team stats and the law of probabilities.
Like a Terminator from film fame, the protagonist in the Story Mode of the latest Power Pro Kun travels back through time to save the day. Seems a company that invents something critical to the future is in danger of insolvency. A successful (and profitable) baseball club may save the company and rescue generations far off from the here and now. To ensure that the mission goes according to plan, a baseball team must be assembled, baseball games won, and the company rescued from the pressures of crushing debt.

Sonic Battle

GBA Sonic Battle - Shipping Today

The Sonic crew (Sonic, Shadow, Knuckles, Rouge, Tails and more) romp and battle in a fighting free-for-all where the furry animals pick attack skills and use them in scrolling arenas. Fought on an isometric field, four friends linked by cable may participate in frenetic competitions. Only one cartridge is required for multi-player gaming. Successful combatants earn points for adding attacks and new skills to improve their level of game.
In a sampling of the battle mode this morning, NCS chose Shadow and ran around on a smoothly scrolling playfield as Tails and Knuckles chased and targeted our hero for destruction. A number of platforms divide the first arena into a sort of rudimentary maze with areas to hide behind when the need calls.  The camera eases along nicely as the fighters rush around the screen with no jittery movements or stutter-step animation. Fluid. The "A" button forces Shadow to jump and the "B" button sets off an attack. Jumping up and then attacking pulls off a diving attack while double-tapping in any direction ignites a furious dash move. Two slaps of the "A" button will allow most fighters to bound across nearly a third of the screen to dash away from danger or to join a heated battle with the quickness.

DC Puyo Puyo Fever Preorders - Shipping Feb. 24, 2004

Compile's fabled puzzle game series hops to a new version early next year with changes not seen since the Sun Puyo was introduced on Saturn many moons ago. The colorful intro screen and game no longer stars the affable munchkin known as Arle Arja but an equally effervescent blonde who wears a Puyo hat atop her golden locks makes her debut. Similar to Ms Arja's escapades, our heroine meets and competes against oddly appointed characters in games of Puyo Puyo to determine winner and pecking order.
Once the game begins, the familiar Puyos rain down in groups of two. The graphics are shinier than previous incarnations and each duo of Puyos bounce like buoyant jelly once they hit the ground. Sprightly sound effects also accompany the visual bounces for that immersive experience. On each player's gaming area, background graphics splash a little bit of color and substance to the visual simplicity. Puyo Puyo Fever adds an aptly named Fever Meter to the game which lies to the side of each gamer's window. It's made up of 7 circles which measure your Fever level and one fills up the Fever by setting up chain combos of at least 2 linked Puyo pops. Set off combos when the meter is full and shining like a beacon and you'll see a bunch of 3-D effects on your side of the screen as the Puyo stacks move around in a cinematic circus show. The camera will zoom in on the Puyos and show them being popped in 3-D isometric action. Linking a number of combos together will throw down a bunch of transparent Puyos on your opponent which blocks its own combo making capabilities. Create a mega-chain of at least 5 linked Puyo pops and you'll squash a big transparent Puyo on your opponent which takes up the space of four regular Puyos.
NCS anticipates time-consuming fun and tactics once Puyo Fever reaches market and we're already practicing on Puyo Puyo games of the recent past to hone our combo creation skills...
Preorders for the Dreamcast and Gamecube versions of Puyo Puyo Fever are welcome today. Playstation 2 preorders are already open.
