Seven Samurai 20XX has
nothing to do with Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai film. Nothing. Well, the hero
Natoe recruits six fighters to help him defend a human city from marauding
robots. In Kurosawa's classic, a samurai named Kambei Shimada recruits six
skilled samurai to help defend a meek village from bandits. So, we have one plot
similarity - nothing else hearkens back to the film but hey, Kurosawa's son had some
artistic input...
Sometime in the very near future, armies of robots take over the world but on
20XX, a samurai warrior named Natoe fights for humanity in the last remaining
bastion. Along with his own impressive sword skills, six additional warriors may
be called forth to battle alongside Natoe against the metal hordes in 3-D slash
'n slash some more action. Hero Natoe's moves include Shinobi-like "tates" where a series of enemies are attacked in smooth sequence and a charge-up
move where he swings two swords at masses of bots. Production values and gameplay are on par with other recent hack 'n slashers and the game will appeal
to action fans. Since the Samurai Seven name was used so liberally
without any significant linkage to the source material,
we fear Yojimbo Reloaded, Rashomon
Revolutions or perhaps Ran 50XX might follow if this particular game sells
especially well...
