Gyakuten Saiban 3

GBA Gyakuten Saiban 3 - Shipping Today

Courtroom dramatics and theatrics rear their respective heads again in Capcom's latest in the Gyatuken Saiban series. The introductory scenario takes place a few years before the events in the first GS game where we find fledgling legal eagle Ryuichi Naruhodo studying diligently to become a great lawyer. Things go awry one day when Ryuichi is accused of murder and a lawyer named Chihiro Ayasato is called forth to defend the young Naruhodo. Join the team and ferret out clues, read cues and dig up information to free Ryuichi from a potential conviction. Subsequent scenarios follow Ryuichi as he progresses in his career and follows new events that take place after Gyatuken Saiban 2. Similar to previous games in the GS series, the game consists primarily of character interaction, investigative jaunts and the questioning of witnesses. The usual special effects apply where courtroom intonations shake the virtual screen of the GBA and BOLD words convey courtroom thunder. Ample spot animations are evident in the characters as they speak, perform actions and stand there talking or testifying for a bit of movement amidst the legal banter.

Fu-un Shinsengumi

  PS2 Fu-un Shinsengumi - Shipping Today

After Commodore Perry "encouraged" the Japanese to sign the Treaty of Kanagawa on March 31st, 1854 and therefore opened up trade with the United States, Japan was in thrown into chaos. Japan's 200 years of self-imposed isolation ended and the samurai ranks began to question the power of the Shogunate and its ability to defend Japan. In his second trip to Japan, Perry had threatened to shell Edo if his demands were not met and the Shogunate had buckled too easily to his whims. Journeying from the whole of Japan, marauding bands of roshis (masterless samurai warriors - not ronins or rurounis) gathered in Kyoto and sought to topple the perceived weak Shogunate and repel the invaders who had arrived on the black ships.
Such ruckuses called for action and a band of policemen called the Shinsengumi were assembled to squash any insurgencies however low or insignificant. The Shinsengumi's tactics were to group together in roving teams to dispel any attacks and the game follows this tactic closely. Up to four members may be grouped in a gang to roam the city and beat down groups of rabble rousers. Only one fighter may be controlled at a time but the others in your group are at the ready for backup when necessary. Attacks consist of sword slashes, parries and the occasional death blow.

Phantom Brave

PS2 Phantom Brave - Shipping Today

On a small island, located somewhere across the sea, there lives a young girl named Marone. Gifted with the ability to control phantoms, Marone earns her bread and butter by accepting missions from clients who contact her by way of bottled messages. Upon receiving a request for help, Marone gathers together a cadre of phantoms and the group stalks out on battles and scenarios to make their money.

Phantom Brave bears similarities to Disgaea and there's good reason for that - illustrator Takehito Harada returns as character designer with his cel-shade-like renderings and the gaming genre  is pure tactical strategy. The movement phase in Phantom Brave does not rely on grids any longer and party members are free to roam the landscape within a certain boundary per move. Battles are also evolved from Disgaea where character with higher agility levels are able to act as the vanguard of a group and attack before those with lower agility. Since Marone's crew consists of ephemeral phantoms, they cannot attack enemies directly. Rather, the phantoms possess inanimate objects, weapons and other battlefield remnants in order to wield them with spiritual force. A limited edition of Phantom Brave is also in stock which contains an art booklet and a music CD along with the game.

Myu takes the entrance examination and passes with flying colors. As such, she enters Vara Noir academy and goes on an adventure where she will eventually help save the kingdom.
Idea Factory's latest game in the Kingdom of Chaos series features dungeon exploration, character interaction and an Megami-Tensei-esque item synthesis system where special items found in dungeons may be bonded with weapons to increase attack power, imbue properties, etc. Interaction sequences are of the point 'n click sort where questions and answers are rattled off in routine fashion.
Originally released on the PS2 last year, Gakuen Toshi Vara Noir joins the Gamecube library with new animation sequences and graphical updates which freshen up the adventure for old and new gamers to enjoy.
