PS2 Monster Hunter - Shipping as of Thursday

In a world where monsters rule the land and exist alongside man, players adopt the role of a bloodthirsty hunter who slaughters beasts for a living. Quests are doled out by contractors who pay good coin for monster work and other menial tasks on the killing fields. In addition to hunting quests, players may also venture out on retrieval missions or compete for bounties. Upon starting the game, character genesis hands creative control over to the player where facial features, hair style and shade, skin tone and sex are determined. For males, pony tails, shaggy locks and bowl-style haircuts seem to be the rage while females sport hair seemingly inspired by the women of FFX-2.

Depending on a hunter's clan and class, a range of weaponry may be used such as swords, scimitars, spears and a strange looking firearm for distance attacks. Shooters are also able to groove into "sniper" mode where far-off monsters are targeted with cross-hairs and unerring aim. Traps may be set to snare doddering creatures unlucky enough to fall in - once it's incapacitated and thrashing about, an opportunistic hunter may swoop in and finish the beast off with a few weighty chops. Once dead, a monster may be carved up for barbecue on a rotating spit, skinned for its lustrous hide, and rendered into weapon and armor upgrades. Little is wasted.

When wandering a town, players may visit guilds for information and quests, seek out vendors for items to purchase, and chat up everyday folk who walk around on their errands and daily routines. Towns teem with life and there's a lot to take in and explore on the streets and inside the many shops. Towns are also where fellow travelers meet up and form into roving bands with a common objective - monster hunting. Up to four players may join together as an online gang and party together across the land. For the unwired, it's also possible to play the game offline without companions or comaraderie.
