Shikigami no Shiro 2

DC Shikigami no Shiro 2 - In Stock

RE LE
Alfa System debuted Shikigami no Shiro 2 on the Gamecube first, followed by the Playstation 2 version. Both were acceptable renditions and we got our jollies out of them. For purists however, the Dreamcast version reps a true 1:1 port of the Naomi GD-Rom code along with a few game options which enhance the overall experience. Players may modify the size of enemy bullets as well as the speed of all onscreen pellets. Coupled with the variable shot velocity and size, the sphere of "influence" of the Tension Bonus System (call it a buzz perimeter, ala Psyvariar) may be expanded or contracted for some experimental buzzing forays. The TBS behooves one to get nicked and cut by near miss scattershot to rack up mass bonus points.
A regular edition of Shikigami no Shiro 2 is available as well as a limited edition of the game which includes a bonus official soundtrack mastered by Alfa System. A full review of DC Shikigami 2 will be posted on the shop listing.

Bobobob

GBA Bobobo 9 Kyoku Sensi Gyagu - In Stock

The mighty master of nose hair returns to the GBA in an action-adventure game that plays awfully similar to the previous one. It's like Hudson broke out the Bobobo game construction kit. Travel the world with comrades, encounter enemies in wacky fighting sequences, and play a bevy of mini-games which include an excellent vertical shooter.

Afterburner II

PS2 Afterburner II - Sega Ages 2500 - In Stock

In 1987, a year after the movie Top Gun stoked audiences everywhere, Yu Suzuki developed the original Afterburner game for Sega. Controlled by a relatively massive analog joystick in the coin-op cab, virtual pilots shot, locked-on, rocked, and rolled through thrilling levels and faced squadrons of enemy ships hellbent on relieving quarter droppers of all their coin. Afterburner was released in an upright arcade cabinet as well as an enclosed sit-in cab where hydraulics pumped the cab up and down like a carnival ride.
The original Afterburner featured pseudo 3-D graphics which were meant to simulate the illusion of brisk flight. The Sega Ages upgrade features true 3-D imagery where the action blows by in fast, herky jerky action. The standard F-14 Tomcat is the regulation issue jetfighter in Arcade Mode but a few other planes may be used in the other game modes. A total of 30 stages are available in Normal Mode, of which 23 are based on the original game levels and 7 are entirely new.

Dragon Quest V

Caravan under the stars

PS2 Dragon Quest V: Bride of the Sky - In Stock

As the story begins, Lord Papas is pacing the room anxiously when a servant rushes in and announces the Queen has just given birth. Papas joins his beloved in the birthing chamber and takes hold of his newborn son. The queen apparently suffers some complications and the scene shifts. Papas and his heir are aboard a ship and they soon reach their port of entry. They return to Santa Rosa where they're welcomed with open arms. As the prince wanders around the town, a hooded lady in the church mentions that the Queen passed away when he was just a child and a few villagers complain about the abnormally cool weather. Papas also seems very busy in town...
In the first few encounters, blue slime, thorny, gophecadas and other insignificant creatures attack but they're little threat and serve to provide experience and gold. The creatures have all been redrawn in grand detail with brilliant colors. Monsters also animate beautifully with little tics, fluid attacks and other motion during encounters. Watch as a cyclops smashes its club and king slimes billow out like inflatable marshmallow monsters. Encounters were fairly prolific in the original game but they're even more so in the PS2 update. Four party members are possible, up from three in the original and every monster encountered in the game may be a potential party inductee. Some other enhancements include the ability to adventure with both potential brides later in the game and an Artifact Collecting mode where players adopt the role of a treasure hunter and search the world for valuables to display in a museum.

Hokuto no Ken

Kenshirou vs punk rockers

PS2 Hokuto no Ken - Sega Ages 2500 - In Stock

In 1986, Hokuto no Ken aka Fist of the Northstar made its first appearance on a video game console by haunting the Famicom library with a desolate post-apocalyptic scenario and side scrolling punch 'n kick action. A few years later, Sega released a Hokuto no Ken game for the MegaDrive which was somewhat deplorable. The control scheme and limited moves proved to be disappointing. In that earlier game, Ken's kicks sent enemies flying diagonally across the screen like missiles and bosses were nigh impossible to defeat with the limited reach of Ken's punches and kicks.
Over a decade after that unimpressive showing, Sega seeks redemption for its past transgression. The Sega Ages update of Hokuto no Ken was originally slated for delivery in December of 2003 but was delayed for three months. Was the extra time well spent in creating a playable game worthy of Northstar fanboy adulation? We'd have to give that a lukewarm yes. The side scrolling punch 'n kick action is not revolutionary but the mottled polygon visuals are interesting. The controls are executed more fairly in favor of the player and attacks connect with bosses better.  A superior power-up attack system is evident where abusing the △ button builds up a Fighting Spirit Meter which fuels special attacks. Once full, button combinations must be followed to ignite moves. Enemies no longer go flying across the screen when hit and seemingly crumble into makeshift deformations when totaled.
Sega's original Hokuto no Ken contained six stages but the update counts 10 stages in its inventory along with simple side scenes which string the storyline along. A new Kensei Mode features boss battles only where the bosses in the game are fought in sequence. These battles can become comical however because Kenshiroh and foe stand toe to toe and fire off a massive volley of punches at each other like statues with supersonic arms.

King of Fighters 2002

Mai fans the flames

PS2 King of Fighters 2002 - In Stock

Iori, Kyo and familiar faces from previous years such as Billy Kane, Yamazaki and Yashiro return in KOF 2002 which is built around KOF 1998's mechanics. The classic 3-on-3 team battle formula remains the same and the Strikers system is gone. Exploits have been reduced and fighters are more evenly matched against each other for better balance. Team players gain power stock for Max mode which is used for actions such as Fast Emergency Escape, Guard Cancellation Body Toss Attack, Guard Cancellation Emergency Escape, Super Cancellation and other cancel/escape moves. A MAX2 Super Desperation Mode is available to fighters for last ditch barrages.
The PS2 version features high resolution 640x448 video, 3-D backgrounds, and sharp graphics which look slightly better than the Dreamcast version of KOF 2002. The action is faithful to the original although the loading times still needs help. A total of 43 characters (4 hidden) are spread out over 13 teams who fight over 18 stages. A number of game modes are available in PS2 KOF 2002 as follows for some sweet variety:

Team Play: Use a 3-man team against CPU
Team Vs: Play a 3-man team against a friend
Single Play: Play one-on-one against the CPU
Single Vs: Play one-on-one against a friend
Practice: Try out and hone Special and Super Special Moves to sharpen your edge
Challenge: Select a fighter and battle though survival mode or timed combat mode
Gallery: Character designs and artwork

Mahjong Party

PS2 Mahjong Party: Duel with the Idol - In Stock

Ten well-endowed gravure models are photographed and corralled into a mahjong game to face off against willing mahjong players. The eye-popping Harumi Nemoto (left) starts off wearing unassuming street clothes. As she inevitably loses rounds of mahjong, her cover eventually blows away until her attributes are shown struggling inside a straining bikini... The MJ action is of average difficulty, in case that matters.

Steady X Study

  PS2 Steady X Study - In Stock

Enter a new high school as a transfer student and find your way in the halls of learning and life in general by interacting with fellow students and potential love interests. Idea Factory enhances the experience of the dating game somewhat by introducing an environment panning mechanism called the "Around Search View" system. When blinking arrows on the side of the screen appear, players may move the camera around and stare at new scenery instead of ogling only at a static panorama as is the case in many other dating games.. Other than this new gimmick, the gameplay is routine with lots of story laid out during conversations with classmates who pop in and out of the player's field of view. Life choices and decisions are made by clicking on options during interaction sequences when then push the story along.
